Sports: Athletic ContestsThe UCLA/USC game is never without worth. In this 2016 edition, there is still a chance that the Trojans could win the Pac-12 South. For UCLA, they would be lucky to find themselves in the bowl season.

Sports: Athletic ContestsThis game means something to the rest of the football world, in that the winner will advance to the Pac-12 football championship. It amounts to a division championship, conference semi-final, and a path to the Rose Bowl. The Football championship will likely elude the winner, even if they win out as the Pac-12 champion. Group29 has been doing this for a long time, covering the UCLA-USC rivalry.

Sports: Athletic ContestsI think Coach Kill did get some credit. Certainly, there were lots of shots of him enjoying the moment. Nice hug by Jerry for Brady Hoke at midfield, "I have been here man, I feel your pain." The Gophers vs Wolverines was a little Ralphie vs Scut Farkus in there, I am sure. Heard some rumors of some Minnesota resident Wolverine fans who have proudly flown their big M flags for years now taking them down. Minnesota has been the nail to Michigan's hammer for a long time. Certainly the Little Brown Jug trophy has been held at Schembechler Hall for many years.

Sports: Athletic ContestsFor only the second time in 14 contests, UCLA has defeated arch-rival USC. This time the Pac-12 Championship game was on the line, for both teams. The probably was the expected outcome when the Pac-12 South Division was formed.

Is this a championship? Or are the division winners just representatives to the Championship?

Sports: Athletic ContestsThe BeatSC.com blogger who runs the Trojan Haters club pretty much summed it up. The UCLA Bruins football team is the scissors to the rock of the USC Trojans football team. UCLA has found itself in a very unlikely position. They are going to play for the PAC-12 championship against the Oregon Ducks in Oregon next week. USC cannot go because they are on probation. So, this game is meaningless in the title sense. Except for the fact that it the UCLA vs. USC game.

Sports: Athletic ContestsAnyone that would use the word meaningless, to describe the upcoming football game between UCLA and USC, really has a fundamental lack of understanding of college football. This game is meaningful in the sense that both schools have looked forward to this date since the schedule was set. A win or loss in this game makes or breaks a season. It also gives students and alumni from the winning school a boost in bragging rights. This is quite important in Los Angeles, since their paths cross every day.

Sports: Athletic ContestsThe 2010 Rose Bowl deserved some serious consideration. The game featured an Oregon team that totally went off the rails. They had a new coach in Chip Kelly, and in their first game, lost to an opponent that they should not have in Boise State. Then LaGarrette Blount did a really stupid thing in going nuts and going after Byron Hout. With the video making the rounds on every sports show and the internet, as the Boise State game was the first of the season, it looked like Oregon had a major team meltdown on their hands.

Sports: Athletic ContestsI lost interest in the college football season as soon as the bowl pairings were announced. I wanted to see USC play Ohio State, not USC vs. Illinois and Ohio State vs. LSU. Also, why did Hawaii have to play in the Sugar Bowl? It would seem that the BCS really did set up the bowl pairings so that there would be no threat of controversy. Imagine a one loss Kansas team beating USC or Georgia if Missouri and Oklahoma win out too. Who’s your number one now? The BCS made the perfect pairing in the 2006 Rose Bowl, but otherwise I contend that it is actually worse than the original conference alignments. Bring back the Big Ten/Pac-10 Rose Bowl!

Sports: Athletic ContestsTo face . . . Hawaii? This is my prediction. The rumors are flying that the Big 10 is pressuring for 13th ranked Illinois at 9-3 and 2nd place to be in the Rose Bowl. Arizona State is ahead at 11. I think neither will be invited. I know this does not play well on the East coast, but on the West coast Hawaii is the best school for the Rose Bowl. The West Coast and Hawaii are closely tied. I pick the undefeated Warriors in the Rose Bowl ahead of Illinois and ASU, as well as Kansas or Missouri. UPDATED

Sports: Athletic ContestsIn a season that has turned out to be - dare I say - wild and wooly, USC and UCLA will arrive at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum playing for a berth in the Rose Bowl. USC can get there by winning out. This was the expected outcome, except for the fact that USC was also expected to be in the BCS championship. One unlikely loss to the Stanford Cardinal may prove to be the greatest of upsets for the whole season. It is already in the books as the biggest point spread difference in college football history. UCLA needs to beat USC and hope that Arizona beats Arizona State. Arizona State hopes that UCLA wins and that they beat Arizona. The Oregon Ducks are out of contention. Greg Patton of the Riverside Press -Enterprise calls the Bruins a "daisy in the way of a lawnmower".

Sports: Athletic ContestsThe Orange Bowl stadium played host to its last Miami Hurricanes football game. Although it never really was a bowl shaped stadium, Dade County is not really an orange producing area, and the Orange Bowl game is clearly a ripoff of the Rose Bowl, the stadium hosted some great college football over the years. Miami is one of the few Division I schools that does not play football on its own campus, and that makes them doomed to wander from place to place at the whims of the city and other professional franchises.

Sports: Athletic ContestsBut for knocking UCLA starting quarterback out in week 6 and recovering fumbles and interceptions from a walk-on third string, Notre Dame would be 0-9. The UCLA win is the only thing out of place for Notre Dame. Otherwise, they are right where we expected them to be at week two. How about those Midshipmen? Navy had not beaten Notre Dame in a whole lifetime of college football. The contract for Charlie Weis is supposed to run through 2015. That is a lot of teeth gnashing.
