The UCLA - USC Game carries some weight in the Pac-12 South, in that USC could emerge the winner following a decisive win over UCLA, and a loss by Utah in the next two weeks. USC has beaten the Utes, and the Utes just punished the Bruins 49-3. It does not look good for the blue team in the matchup this year.

The Group29 Editor writes "This is the lucky 13th preview of the annual UCLA - USC football game. It has not really every looked like a slam dunk for the Bruins any of the reviews we have done in the past, and this year is no exception. (The Bruins could not win with machetes is one of my all-time favorites from the past.) This game is always meaningful, but perhaps not on a national level. USC already has earned their spot in the Pac-12 championship game. UCLA has very little to show for this season."

The UCLA/USC game is never without worth. In this 2016 edition, there is still a chance that the Trojans could win the Pac-12 South. For UCLA, they would be lucky to find themselves in the bowl season.

This game means something to the rest of the football world, in that the winner will advance to the Pac-12 football championship. It amounts to a division championship, conference semi-final, and a path to the Rose Bowl. The Football championship will likely elude the winner, even if they win out as the Pac-12 champion. Group29 has been doing this for a long time, covering the UCLA-USC rivalry.

I think Coach Kill did get some credit. Certainly, there
were lots of shots of him enjoying the moment. Nice hug by Jerry for Brady Hoke
at midfield, "I have been here man, I feel your pain." The Gophers vs
Wolverines was a little Ralphie vs Scut Farkus in there, I am sure. Heard some
rumors of some Minnesota resident Wolverine fans who have proudly flown their
big M flags for years now taking them down. Minnesota has been the nail to
Michigan's hammer for a long time. Certainly the Little Brown Jug trophy has
been held at Schembechler Hall for many years.

UCLA has missed the Pac-12 championship game even after mounting a furious comeback against ASU. It would have been their greatest of all time. USC is on a five game winning streak now that Lane Kiffin has been unceremoniously dumped at LAX. Ed Orgeron is the coach to beat.

For only the second time in 14 contests, UCLA has defeated arch-rival USC. This time the Pac-12 Championship game was on the line, for both teams. The probably was the expected outcome when the Pac-12 South Division was formed.
Is this a championship? Or are the division winners just representatives to the Championship?

In nine years of previewing, this is the first time the UCLA (17) has been ranked higher that USC (21) in the polls coming into the game. Up to this point, the Bruins have been subject to machetes, rock to the scissors, and a 50-0 blowout. There was one lone victory in 2006.

The BeatSC.com blogger who runs the Trojan Haters club pretty much summed it up. The UCLA Bruins football team is the scissors to the rock of the USC Trojans football team. UCLA has found itself in a very unlikely position. They are going to play for the PAC-12 championship against the Oregon Ducks in Oregon next week. USC cannot go because they are on probation. So, this game is meaningless in the title sense. Except for the fact that it the UCLA vs. USC game.

The 2010 Rose Bowl deserved some serious consideration. The game featured an Oregon team that totally went off the rails. They had a new coach in Chip Kelly, and in their first game, lost to an opponent that they should not have in Boise State. Then LaGarrette Blount did a really stupid thing in going nuts and going after Byron Hout. With the video making the rounds on every sports show and the internet, as the Boise State game was the first of the season, it looked like Oregon had a major team meltdown on their hands.

This is the annual Group29 preview of the upcoming UCLA / USC rivalry game to be played at the Rose Bowl Stadium on December 6th 2008. Since the previews started, the USC Trojans have been on a series of top 10 finishes. Without exception, USC has been the predicted winner. Our favorite past prediction had been "The Bruins could not win this game with machetes".

I lost interest in the college football season as soon as the bowl pairings were announced. I wanted to see USC play Ohio State, not USC vs. Illinois and Ohio State vs. LSU. Also, why did Hawaii have to play in the Sugar Bowl? It would seem that the BCS really did set up the bowl pairings so that there would be no threat of controversy. Imagine a one loss Kansas team beating USC or Georgia if Missouri and Oklahoma win out too. Who’s your number one now? The BCS made the perfect pairing in the 2006 Rose Bowl, but otherwise I contend that it is actually worse than the original conference alignments. Bring back the Big Ten/Pac-10 Rose Bowl!

To face . . . Hawaii? This is my prediction. The rumors are flying that the Big 10 is pressuring for 13th ranked Illinois at 9-3 and 2nd place to be in the Rose Bowl. Arizona State is ahead at 11. I think neither will be invited. I know this does not play well on the East coast, but on the West coast Hawaii is the best school for the Rose Bowl. The West Coast and Hawaii are closely tied. I pick the undefeated Warriors in the Rose Bowl ahead of Illinois and ASU, as well as Kansas or Missouri. UPDATED
