PCs: All about your desktop and laptopI went to the Windows Vista Launch tour, and I was very impressed. (See the Group29 article Series: Windows Vista, Office 2007, Exchange 2007 Launch tour.) I received a copy of Office 2007 Professional for attending. To get started, I purchased a new HP s7700n at to finally move into Windows Vista.

PCs: All about your desktop and laptopIn this fifth part in a multi-part series, I write about more of my experience at the Windows Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange 2007 Launch tour. We had more looks at surveys with Forms Server and Document retention. Plus we covered some more security and reliability features of Windows Vista.

PCs: All about your desktop and laptopIn this portion of the Launch tour, we were able to have a look at SharePoint integration with Exchange 2007and Outlook 2007. Workflow coupled with Content Management has been a high concept since the mid 1990s. “Electronic workflow” was quite the buzz phrase at that time. The idea was that an application would maintain a central database with the status of a particular job. Most demonstrations involved a document review, such as a design document. Going through the workflow would route it to each person in the approval chain until the document was finally approved.

PCs: All about your desktop and laptopIn part three of my coverage of the Vista and Office 2007 launch I talk about demos by Nick Stillings, Microsoft Information Worker Solution Specialist

The bulk of this session was all about some cool features in Office 2007. One thing that is a paradigm change is the ribbon in Office 2007. The Office 2007 ribbon changes up the toolbars and menu items from the previous versions of Office. As a WordPerfect DOS to Word for Windows convert, I found the ribbon to be a more difficult jump than the DOS menu/function keys to Windows mouse menu.

PCs: All about your desktop and laptopThe second part of the Windows Vista, Office 2007, Exchange 2007 Launch tour was lots of pep and high level talks about the new features in Windows Vista, Office and Exchange. Some of these changes are not baby steps, but forklift upgrades. The best example is the voice and mail integration. The systems might exist on the same network, but voice, data, and e-mail IT staff do not always exist on the same wavelength. Following is some of the points that Microsoft is making for 2007 Launch Tour. (See Part I about the Launch Tour 2007)

On February 1st, 2007, I had my first real look at Office 2007 and first real experience with Microsoft Windows Vista. I had the good fortune of sitting next to a person who was taking notes on an Apple PowerBook. The buzz has been that Vista was merely a retread of Apple OSX.

Windows Desktop Search (MS Search) 3.0 is built into Windows Vista. If you run Office 2007 on Windows XP and want to use the nifty features for searching, you will need to install the app. At the Vista launch, we got a nice showcase of this application. The Mac user next to me announced, “That’s insane”, which I take to mean that it is not a feature found in Mac OSX.
