Motorola RAZR V3 (T-Mobile) [16]

The Motoroloa RAZR V3 is one of the, dare I say, sexiest new phones to arrive on the scene. Those who see it are immediately struck with phone envy. This particular feature gains the phone a few Group29 points. I am a big fan of the flip phone "Kirk Here" Star Trek communicator design.

However, the $200 price plus a contract only gets you basic service. To fully exploit the full features of the phone, you would pay extra for the photo storage service, web service, ring tones, and mail service. As such, you could find yourself spending more than $500 a year to maintain such a device.

Once again, the coolness factor will determine how much you spend to maintain your new phone.

Camera
The pictures are pretty low quality at 640x480 pixels, also known as VGA or less than one megapixel. Plus you need a Bluetooth accessory or Motorola Phone tools and a USB cable to download them. Otherwise you will have to pay to upload to the phone provider web site to get them to your computer. The videos are also marginal at best at 176x144. A convenience store perp cam gets better resolution and clarity. Although, you might just catch something cool if the camera is handy. In a few more generations, the phone and video will be this small and convenient AND high quality.

Bluetooth headseat
The Bluetooth earpiece is a must have, if you are taking your phone to this level. A USB cable, Motorola type, is useful for making your PC become a bridge for web surfing. I highly recommend the car charger. A typical commute to work and home is enough to keep your V3 RAZR fully operational. Note that using the earpiece for hands free driving in your own car is very smart. Using on the street in public makes you look like you have multiple personality disorder. I highly recommend reading some cell phone etiquette articles before going out in public with one of these things.

Voice Activated Dialing
The voice activated dialing is somewhat touchy. Your best use is to keep the numbers at a minimum, say your few most frequently called numbers "home", "work", "school", "voice mail". I have customized my keypad to make my phone directory the first down arrow. Then I can flip through the phone book quickly. I was able to make "Home" the first entry by adding a space before the H.

Skip the insurance
Is cell phone insurance worth it? T-mobile offers a plan for $5.99 a month with a $110.00 deductible. If you plan to break this phone every six months, it might be worth it. Otherwise, plan to be self-insured. Warning: these phones do not like water. One swift dunk and your keyboard will be shot. Also, the voice activated dialing will cause it to repeatedly check the on line phone book. You may still be able to take incoming calls, because you answer with a flip and hang up with a flip.

The DUNK DOT - your wet RAZR
How to identify a RAZR that has been wet: A previously submerged RAZR can be immediatly identified by green corrosion on the charging socket/USB Mini 5 pin connector. Popping the battery cover off and taking the battery out will reveal a red dot where there formerly there was a white dot. There is another inside the works. Do not bother trying to argue the point with a cell phone tech. Red dot = you are out of luck. Wet Razr phones can dry out, but the warranty is null and void. Also they have intermittent keyboard problems or voice recognition problems. My wet one took 10 key presses for each key, even after weeks of drying. It still worked, but only marginally after a quick drop in the water.

Bluetooth makes it better for file transfers
One thing that really adds value to your Moto Razr is a bluetooth card for your computer. I bought a Kensington Bluetooth USB Adapter 2.0. It needed the drivers loaded on both Windows XP service pack one and service pack two.

Once you are ready and the software is loaded, you can go to your Razr and select the menu. Go to the settings and tools. Select "connections". Select the Bluetooth connection. The choose setup. Make sure the Bluetooth power is on. You can uniquely name your phone here if you want. Select Find Me on the Razr menu. Go back to your PC and click on the My Bluetooth places icon. It should find the motorola phone. You will need a PIN generated from the PC that you will then enter on the phone to connect.

Once you have connected to the phone with OBEX file transfer, you can copy files to the video, audio, and pictures directory on your phone. You can also download any pictures you have taken with the camera. Only the user added multimedia is available. There are messages on the web that say this is not possible with certain Verizon razr phones due to the software version. My t-mobile phone worked fine. Bluetooth is not as straightforward as regular wireless internet and seems slow. But it does the job. I am looking forward to loading those free ring tones! I already have some cool pictures loaded.

Storing your contacts
Note that you have the option of storing phone numbers on your SIM or in the phone. Numbers stored in the phone will not travel to your next phone. But, numbers stored in the SIM cannot take advantage of voice dialing, custom pictures and rings.

If your SIM card came from your previous phone, it will probably have your phone book entries. The Moto Razr lets you store your phone book entries on either the phone or the SIM. When they are on the phone you can add personalized icons and ring tones to the names. The down side is that when you move your SIM, these names do not come along! You will probably want to move all your names back to your SIM card before changing phones.
